Introducing our department.

The Department of English was established in March 1955 and renamed the Department of English Language and Literature in 1968 to foster fluency in English and an understanding of Anglo-American society through comprehensive education in English language and literature.

In October 1958, the master's programme was opened along with the opening of the graduate school, and in January 1967, the doctoral programme was established, which has contributed greatly to the development of professional researchers required by the academic and educational communities and was renamed the Department of British and American Studies in 2021.

Educational Goals

The Department of British and American Studies is a department that researches and teaches English language and literature, and aims to foster human resources with an international outlook in the 21st century through English language and literature education. In order to cultivate human resources for the globalisation era, education pursues both theory and practicality. In addition, we cultivate competent students through the use of audio-visual equipment and lectures by native professors.

Distinctive Program

  • TESOL Course A programme to produce teachers who teach English as a foreign language.
  • Interpreting Course A programme to train interpreters through lectures on English-Korean translation and video translation based on the understanding of interpretation in the second-year major course.

    What are the benefits of taking a teaching course?

    If you complete a teaching course during your studies, you will be able to obtain your teaching certification upon graduation. Junior High School Proofreading Teacher (Level 2)].

    How is the selection process for teaching in the Department of English and American Studies conducted?

    Students who have passed the aptitude and personality tests administered by the Academic Affairs Division (administered in the second year) are selected based on their grade point average up to the third semester and the score from the departmental interview (30 points).

    The number of students selected for each department varies each year.Generally, about 10 percent of the department's faculty members are selected. (Department of English Language and Literature: 8 students selected in 2022)
