Introducing our department.

Department of Children's Studies deals with integrated studies in which the humanities and social sciences are applied, such as children's studies, early childhood education, psychology and counseling. The department aims to train students to acquire a wide range of basic knowledge related to children and families and to become experts in infant education, childcare, and consultation.

The curriculum is designed to enable students to learn various theories and practices related to basic theories of early childhood education and care, development and guidance, infant and toddler education, health, and community relations, and to apply these to the field to develop their abilities and qualifications as child reserve specialists.

From 2023, the school will operate a micro-module system (infant care and education module and child psychology and counseling module) to help students effectively prepare for career advancement and strengthen their competitive edge.

  • The program trains professionals who have both specialized knowledge and practical skills by having them study basic theory and experience a variety of practical training in collaboration with the field.

  • Characterized curricula and undergraduate/graduate collaboration
    • We support complementary and integrated learning and career development in the detailed field of child studies through the operation of curricula that encompass the fields of infant care and education and child psychology and counseling.
    • Detailed field-specific "Department of Child Psychology and Counseling" and "Department of Infant and Child Development" professional development enhancement through cooperation in graduate school advancement.
    • To strengthen the competitiveness of career advancement and major competencies through the operation of the micro-module system (infant care and education module, child psychology and counseling module).
    • Through the operation of the cooperative master's degree programs (Department of Infant Studies and Department of Child Psychology and Counseling), which allow students to graduate after 3.5 years of undergraduate study and 1.5 years of graduate study, the program ensures efficient completion of degree programs.
  • Education to strengthen on-site competencies based on the establishment of cooperative frameworks with commissioning organizations
    • The Department of Children's Studies will strengthen field competencies through a method that actively links theory and field (practical) training.
    • Observation practice, on-site experience, internship, and childcare practice in cooperation with the Gangseo-gu Childcare General Support Center under commissioned operation, a total of 8 nurseries in Busan, MOU nurseries, and other cooperating organizations
  • Establishment of new subject areas and educational management in line with the changing times
    • Establishment of new subjects such as children's content and industry, children's field seminar (capstone design), and curriculum management in line with the changing times, while encouraging student-led challenges in content development, business start-up preparation, and expansion of employment and career fields.
    • Special lectures by various experts are held throughout the year (examples in 2022: special lecture by the director of the Comprehensive Childcare Support Center, special lecture by an AI robot industrial entity for infants, special lecture on making upcycling picture books using an app, special lecture by a representative of an infant educational materials and education service company, special lecture on hand play qualification, special lecture by a graduate, etc.).     What is the status of your recent post-graduation career

    Students interested in the field of infant and toddler care and education are mainly employed in national, public or workplace nursery schools, including those commissioned by Dong-A University, as well as in kindergartens if they have completed a teaching degree. Regionally, in addition to Busan, there are also cases of students working at nursery schools in Ulsan, Geoje, and Seoul. In addition, students may obtain a national certification as a youth counselor or continue their studies in the counseling and psychology field by entering graduate school and becoming a counselor or play therapist. Students in the Master's program graduate in 3.5 years from the undergraduate program and 1.5 years from the graduate program, and their bachelor's and master's degree programs are accelerated by 6 months each, allowing them to effectively deepen their studies in their majors.

    What kind of institutions do you actually go to for practical training?

    The Department of Children's Studies at Dong-A University is commissioned to operate one institution, the Busan Gangseo-gu Childcare Comprehensive Support Center, and a total of eight national, public, and workplace nurseries in Busan. Practical training takes various forms, including volunteer, observation, observation practice, childcare practice, field experience, and internship. Students interested in the field of consultative psychology receive practical training at the Child and Adolescent Psychology Consultation Center, which has a cooperative relationship with the Department of Children's Studies.

    How do I complete the teaching program and how do I obtain a kindergarten teaching certificate?

    The Department of Children's Studies selects the students with the highest scores among those who apply for the teaching program by summing up their scores up to the first semester of their sophomore year and an interview test to be conducted separately in the second semester of their sophomore year. In the Department of Children's Studies, 10% of the students are selected as teaching students, and students who are selected as teaching students can take the teaching course from the third year and obtain a Level 2 regular kindergarten teacher certification upon graduation.
