Introducing our department.

The Department of Korean Literature is capable of cultivating diverse and deep insights based on a rich background and knowledge of Korean language and literature, including Japanese linguistics, modern literature, classical literature, reading education, and novel creation, and is able to train researchers in Korean literature, regional culture specialists, and creative professionals in the field of culture and art.

The program imparts basic and specialized knowledge of the Korean language, literature, and culture, and helps students develop diverse content production skills and storytelling utilization skills.

Through the Humanities Livelihood, we can explore the many ways in which the humanities can take root in the community.

Educational Goals
  • First, to impart basic and specialized knowledge of the Korean language, literature, and culture.The department cultivates specialized skills in the humanities through basic and in-depth education in the Korean language, traditional Korean culture and literature, and contemporary Korean literature and culture, and on this basis, activates exchanges with other language areas and trains specialists in Korean literature.
  • Second, cultivate the ability to produce diverse content and utilize storytelling.Based on an understanding of language and literature, the program cultivates creative professionals in the fields of culture and the arts who can organically drive humanities thinking and interpretation, expression, creation, and fusion activities, and produce and mediate diverse cultural content.
  • Third, through the humanities' life-making, explore various ways for the humanities to take root in the local community.Form local cultural networks and train local cultural specialists.
  • Fourth, through the globalization of the humanities, we will seek a foundation for the spread of the humanities not only in East Asia, but throughout the world.Utilize the geographical, cultural, and historical characteristics of Busan, an international port city, to send students abroad and to attract an influx of international students. Open and operate programs for international students, create language and cultural synergies between Korean and international students, go beyond school-based exchanges and develop long- and short-term cooperative programs with domestic and international cities and universities, and expand the internationalization capacity of the Department of Korean Literature through student and professor exchanges, academic events and workshops, study tours, and press visits.

  • Korean Literature Specialist Training Based on a correct and accurate knowledge of the Korean language, the program creates the conditions for future generations to contribute to Korean language education, stimulates exchange with other linguistic areas, and fosters the ability to come into contact with new languages and cultures. Through learning the methods and practices of language and literature research, students will develop an independent awareness of traditional and contemporary Korean culture, a deeper and more complex understanding of human existence and the world, and the ability to respect the values of the humanities.This will foster professionals with a diverse and broad understanding of Korean culture and language.
  • Fostering creative human resources in the field of culture and the arts Cultivate the ability to produce diverse content and utilize storytelling. Cultivate creative professionals in the field of culture and the arts who can produce and mediate diverse cultural content by organically driving humanities thinking and interpretation, expression, creation, and fusion activities based on their understanding of language and literature.
  • Training of local cultural specialists The Department of Korean Language and Literature will explore various ways in which the humanities can take root in the local community and actively promote the development of curricula and policy programs. In addition, the Department of Korean Language and Literature, considering the nature of the university based in the "Busan and Gyeongsangnam-do" region, operates a program to train regional specialists who will participate in the formation of regional cultural networks based on regional culture, language, and the humanities.

    Classical Literature SocietyThis circle deals with the literature of Korea's ancestors, classical literature. We strive to break away from the stereotypes about the classics by cultivating our studies and wisdom through classical literature, and by studying classical literature in various ways and approaching it in a friendly manner in accordance with the trends demanded by the times.

    Korean Linguistics Research SocietyFounded in 1981, the Korean Language and Literature Circle is a group that conducts a wide range of research on the Korean language and literature. We study not only phonetics, phonology, morphology, and syntax, but also various fields of linguistics together, such as language culture, correspondence language, dialects, etc. Based on these studies, all members of the society write papers directly and publish a collection of papers every year. We also present directly written papers at the "Summer School".

    Geulpae GogaengiThis is a poetry writing circle. Every week we have a class where we create poems freely and critique each other's work. From the feedback given, the writers themselves correct what needs to be corrected and create better works. We also hold an autumn poetry and painting exhibition where these works are displayed in the lobby of the College of Humanities and Sciences.

    Society for the Study of Creative Novel WritingThis is a circle for exploring and creating novels. Classes are conducted with the individual creations of club members, and club members who are not participating as writers provide feedback and critique of the novels as readers. Classes are structured in a discussion format, allowing students to look at novels from a variety of perspectives and from a broader perspective.

    JitThe first semester of the general playwriting group is devoted primarily to classes for new students to conceive a synopsis, learn terminology, and write a short situation play; the second semester begins with a full-fledged scenario/play critique. In addition to readings, students discuss their first impressions of the work, critique the play, and experience themselves as writer, reader, and actor at the same time.

    Modern Literature Critics AssociationThis is a circle for the appreciation, discussion, and study of various types of texts, including contemporary literature. Texts covered by the Contemporary Literary Criticism Circle include not only literary works, but also films, music, and works of art. All inclusive texts present in society, history, and culture are studied from the perspective of literary criticism.

    MajubogiMajubogi is the representative circle of the Department of Korean Literature. This circle is made up of freshmen and is responsible for performing in a simple choreographed performance at the Department of Korean Literature's representative events.

    Students in the top 10% of their freshman and sophomore year grades may apply for the teaching program. Teaching courses begin in the third year and integrate Korean language and literature courses with teaching courses; in the first semester of the fourth year, students go to middle and high schools for teaching practice, and at the end of the second semester of the fourth year, they are issued a teaching license and are eligible to take the appointment examination.
